Looking for something that actually works? Say hello to Brevena.
They kindly reached out to me and asked if I'd be interested in trying a couple of their products. I took a quick glance at their stuff and said "gladly!". Their products are skin oriented and a bunch have the National Eczema Association seal on them. Not too shabby!
I even have a special discount for you: for 20% off and free shipping, use the code ALLERGISTA20 at checkout.
They decided to send me their Restorative Skin Balm and some Restore & Hydrate Overnight Cream. As always, I was super excited to open the package they sent. Not only do I get to try some potentially awesome stuff, but check out that packaging!
Here's the thing... no matter how many years I've had eczema/allergies/sensitive skin... I still make mistakes sometimes.
And I did this time.
I guess I didn't look close enough at the ingredients list or something because lo and behold... the overnight cream contains propylene glycol.
My heart sunk. It was such a nice, pretty tub of cream. SIGH. That's how it goes with allergies, though! Sometimes you just have to soldier through the disappointment and frustration. In this case, at least I had something else I could try - the skin balm!
After writing my contact at Brevena, they chose the option of having my husband, Matt, review the cream. Not all of you are allergic to PG, so why not take this opportunity, right? He's always had super dry skin and more recently has been dealing with some eczema of his own.
This is Matt. He's THE BEST :-)
Here's what he had to say:
"A little background…. in other words, why does my opinion matter to this audience who has SERIOUS skin stuff to deal with.
I have always had dry, sensitive skin along with terrible acne issues. I took Accutane as a teenager (2 cycles, to be exact) and I actually got developed scales on my forearms. Scales. Until this winter, I had never had a full blown eczema breakout. I learned it's nummular eczema which produces coin-like rashes. Mine started on my hands and although the coins didn't pop up on my legs, I was itching them til I bled in my sleep, nightly.
So, this Overnight Cream shows up. I decided I would try it on my legs only while continuing other lotions on my arms and hands so I had some areas to compare. I'm not gonna lie, I slathered this stuff on generously and I burned through it all within a week, intentionally going to sleep with my legs still wet. However, with in that week, I completely stopped itching legs. My skin was softer to the touch and the wounds I had inflicted were almost completely healed. Upon showering the morning after using it, my legs still felt as if they had a barrier on them.
It says unscented on the jar but it has a slight oatmeal scent to me which I found pleasant. I can be sensitive/averse to smells and this stuff carries very little scent and is not something you will pick up on yourself once it's applied.
I enjoyed the texture of this moisturizing cream a lot. It's very soothing, as soon as it touches the skin. One thing I definitely appreciated was that I didn't have to spend a lot of time rubbing it in. The last thing I want to do is rub my scabby, sore covered legs with some greasy, oily lotion that just won't absorb! This stuff is made to absorb fast which shows some foresight into their audiences needs. Next level moisturizing, people!
Since running out of Brevena's Overnight Cream, I haven't had any more issues with itching my legs at night and this cream absolutely jump started that process. While this cream may be on the pricey side, so is a trip to the dermatologist AND a prescription! I have a new respect for the proper hydration of one's skin after the last few months, not just in problem spots but for every inch of skin you have. A little time, energy and the right product for you, can seemingly make a huge impact. No more lotions or oils for this guy, I'm sticking to the thicker creams that provide an all day/night barrier. This Restore and Hydrate Overnight Cream is a great choice, especially if you are having issues with clawing and scratching in your sleep. We have all sorts of fun things, like shirts with mittens sewn into them, cotton gloves, a dump truck full of lotions/creams/oils but I still find my Wife itching in her sleep…. so unless I stay up and watch her (which would be creepy) or she properly moisturizes, she wakes up with scratches and new wounds. I can say nightly usage of this cream stopped me from itching the first night I used it and kept me from creating any new wounds that entire week. I would absolutely use this product again."
Not too shabby, huh? He gets to try a lot of skin products because of this blog and this one definitely stood out in the crowd.
The product I tried is the Restorative Skin Balm:
As you can see in the photo, this skin balm is kinda like an ointment. It's thick and odorless - two things that are great for sensitive, dry skin.
I just so happened to have been dealing with a particularly annoying patch of eczema on the back of my left knee. By the way, do you know how difficult it is to take photos of the back of your knee? I had to twist myself into a pretzel.
This patch of eczema looks like a bruise from a distance, but with a closer look you can see it's nothing but dry, irritated skin:
I put Brevena's Resorative Skin Balm on every night before bed and a few weeks later...
It had made major progress! Almost completely gone!
The only negative thing I could say about it is that it didn't help with the itch. The healing benefits made it all worthwhile, though.
Overall, when it comes to effectiveness we both give Brevena two thumbs up! Four thumbs total!
