ASK THE ALLERGISTA: What's your experience been regarding allergies and fragrance?

Q:

Okay, I am trying to find an eczema cream for my child's skin and they seem to all contain a fragrance, before I try it on my sons skin, what has been your experience from people who have allergies and fragrances applied to their skin?

A:

In my opinion, people with allergies are people with sensitive skin. And anybody with sensitive skin should avoid extra added chemicals if possible - fragrance being one of them. People's reactions vary greatly, so definitely try doing patch tests with any products first. That way, if your son's skin doesn't react well, it will only be a small patch of skin that needs to heal. I usually do a patch test and then if all goes well, I'll try the product for a week. If that goes without any reactions, I know I'm in the clear! I tend to react to perfumes, but not always to fragrance in body products. I'm not sure why I react to perfume since they don't list the ingredients on the labels. I wish they would, but that's a whole other blog post.

There are a lot of great eczema products online that you could try on your son. Make sure to check out The Eczema Company as well as VMV Hypoallergenics. They've got some great stuff.

I hope this helps! Good luck!

Sincerely,

The Allergista
