Ask The Allergista: Do you know of pain killers without propylene glycol?

Q:

Happy to hear I am not ALONE!!!! I was diagnosed about 5 yrs ago with propylene glycol allergy. Woke up this am with the worst cramps of my life only able to shoot a few shots of gin to take away the pain. Aleve, Midol, Bayer and others all have PG. What do you take for pain? It's not the 1800's and I need something besides alcohol! Look forward to hearing from you

A:

Hi!

You are SO not alone. There are a lot of people out there who are allergic to propylene glycol. It's one of the most common reasons people come to my blog!

I actually don't take pain medication since all of my allergies exploded back in 2009. I rarely get headaches and I usually just soldier through the cramps. I know that mine aren't as bad as other women, though.

I did some looking around and I've found a few things that don't contain PG. I also found some Aleve and Midol without PG. They DO contain polyethylene glycol, but no propylene glycol. These are indeed two different things. That was something my doctor made sure to stress to me. I actually get nauseous if I consume PG and I definitely don't have any reactions with PEG.

Here are some pain relievers without propylene glycol:

Ibuprofen

Aleve

Midol

I hope this helps! Best of luck.

Sincerely,

The Allergista
