Ask The Allergista: Could the cracks on the side of my mouth be allergy related?

Q:

Have you ever had angular cheilitis (cracks on corners of mouth, usually accompanied by red blotchy skin)? Ive had it off and on for years, my dermatologist usually suggest hydrocortisone or aquaphore but lately nothing has been working. Just wondering if you think could be allergy related? Or if anyone else has suggestions? Its so uncomfortable and embarassing, even things like talking and chewing are difficult.

Hi there!

I'm sorry to hear about this :-( Having embarrassing skin problems is less than fun... especially when they're uncomfortable. You know, I've never had this specific problem. I'm really not sure if this could be allergy related or not. When I get allergic reactions on my lips, I get these almost invisible tiny bumps aaaall over them. No cracks, though.

I'm going to have to turn this one over to the readers:
