Ask The Allergista: My Skin Won't Stop Reacting!

Q:

I’m feeling very frustrated because I am super itchy and have hives everywhere! I am very careful of what I use on my skin and what I eat. Recently, the shampoo that I have used for years changed formulas and so I have had to switch and I’m not sure if I’m allergic or not to it. I ran out of my Dove for sensitive skin and bought some more and found out that it looks like they changed their formula and it has Dimethicone and PEG-8.

Then I looked at the medicine that I’ve been taking to help the itching and it has polyethylene glycol so maybe I’m making it worse! I have been gluten free for 2 year and have seen overall improvement in my health but feel like I’m still struggling!

Sorry for venting I’m just not sure what to do anymore.

A:

No problem, please don't apologize for venting! You deserve to be able to. I mean, your skin is breaking out all over! Being itchy all over can be the WORST. It's annoying, distracting and aggravating.

Are you using the body wash? I use the Dove Gentle Exfoliating Bar and don't have any problems with it. I've found that most of the body washes are a lost hope as far as avoiding PG goes.

Also, could you possibly be allergic to your clothing? I'm just tying to think of things that blanket the skin all over like soap or shampoo or clothing.... even blankets. Have you done the patch testing yet? You can find a patch testing doctor at this link.

It's probably a good idea to do a new test every handful of years in case you develop any allergies. Also, get your vitamin levels checked out because sometimes, that's the root of the problem for some people.

Also, here's what I do when my skin is freaking out.

I hope your skin shows improvement soon! *HUG*

Sincerely,

The Allergista
