Ask The Allergista: What's your opinion on homemade products?

Q:

What is your viewpoint on homemade lotions and soaps for those with severe skin allergies? I've been hearing a lot about how it is supposed to be helpful, but I'm not sure if it is really worth my time.

A:

Thanks for writing me!

I think it's definitely worth investigating. Different things work for different people - as severe allergy sufferers, our triggers really run the gamut, so different thing are going to work for different people.

I recently purchased some EczeHerbal Ointment and if you look at the ingredients, it's just olive oil, beeswax and herbs. If you had the right recipe, something like this could definitely be made at home. I've only been using it for about 24 hours and it's not irritating me so far, so that's a step in the right direction.

I have a lot of respect for companies that work hard to figure out natural solutions. Ideally, I think everything should be 100% organic. Chemicals are so harsh and I feel like they should only be used when there's no other option - such as medical situations when we need modern medicine like chemo. Financially, it definitely is hard for the typical person to afford all 100% organic items / solutions. We absolutely need to take steps when we are able, though!

If you give it a shot and find some products that work, please come back and share!

Sincerely,

The Allergista
