Ask The Allergista: Are there any PEG and EG-free moisturizers out there?

Q:

I was first diagnosed with a several reaction to propylene glycol (PG) and “a” certain fragrance. Since there are so many of the fragrances out there, my allergist didn’t try to figure out which. I couldn't find any make-up nor moisturizer to use which didn't cause a reaction.

A few days ago, I ran out of my allergy pills, so I took another brand which had polyethylene glycol ( PEG) in the evening. I woke up with very itchy hands. I had broken out in a rash. At the same time, I also had a hard time swallowing because my throat hurts, thought I came down with a cold or flu.

The sore throat didn’t go away nearly 2 nights later although the rashes on my hands and itchiness had gone away. My daughter said perhaps the sore throat can be due to the PEG. Have an appointment with my allergist late next month, the first opening he had.

During the interim, has any one found a moisturizer that doesn't contain PEG or EG?

A:

I'm so sorry to hear about the complications you've been having! It sounds like it's really hitting you hard :-(

Avoiding Propylene Glycol can be quite the under-taking. Here are some more things you should avoid/always read the label on in addition to body products.

And here are 3 PG, PEG and EG-free choices for moisturizer:

Aveeno Baby Eczema Therapy Cream

Bag Balm (It sounds weird, but I've seen this stuff around for a WHILE!)

Eucerin Original Moisturizing Cream

Also, in regard to make-up, click here for some PG-free options!

Hope this helps :-)
