Well, I hate to say it, but I had an unfortunate experience at Trader Joe's last month. A couple years ago, I was told by a Trader Joe's employee that none of the items in their stores contain hydrogenated oils and chemical preservatives. I was THRILLED because that's my most annoying allergy when it comes to grocery shopping. This means that I don't even look at the labels on the food when I'm there which is a big time saver to me.
So, last month I brought home some yummy Chocolate Peppermint Brownies. Tasty looking, right? I even opened the packaging and was ready to chow down.
Buuuut before I ate some, I just so happened to read the label (force of habit especially when I'm bored). And THIS is what I saw!
UGH!!!! My brain almost exploded on the spot! Such a disappointment.
The next day, I called the store and spoke with a manager who made sure to double check their company guidelines. The manager apologized to me and said the employee was incorrect and the following guidelines are what they obey:
- No artificial flavors, colors or preservatives
- No added Trans Fats
- No MSG
- No genetically modified ingredients
There's nothing in their rules about hydrogenated oils. Whomp, whomp....
The manager did say they would make sure their entire staff knows exactly what the rules are from now on, which was nice.
Maybe one day they'll ban hydrogenated oils as well? A girl can wish!
